Accomplishments

Here are a few of our Fiscal Year 2009 accomplishments. For a more complete list of our FY09 results please see our 2009 Results Report!


Capable Kids and Families (CKF) Family Support

CKF provided support and equipment to 92 children in 2009. Family Support provides home visitation, support group meetings, activities, and a therapy equipment loan program to families of children with disabilities and developmental delays.

  • 73% of families reported that the equipment loan program has reduced the financial impact of having a child with a disability.
  • 86% reported a decrease in their feelings of isolation.
  • 100% reported improvement in their child’s development
  • 100% of therapists reported that CKF supports a child’s developmental progress or improves a child’s quality of life

One family wrote the following note to Capable Kids:  Thank you so much for everything you have done for my child.  You have been a place of support when I needed it most.  This has been a difficult journey but you have made it a little easier and brighter

Independent Living Program (ILP)

The ILP program provides ongoing training and support for older foster youth so that they may be successful and independent upon exiting care. In our 2009 Fiscal Year we served 66 different foster youth aged 14-21. Some of our results included:

  • 100% of youth identified that they have a caring adult in their lives
  • 100% of youth served had an increase in life skills knowledge
  • Reached 179% of yearly goal for client contacts (1793 actual vs. goal of 1000)

Community Work Support (CWS)

The CWS program aids needy families who are not participating in work requirements due to barriers and have had their TANF reduced/sanctioned. We prevented or lifted the sanction of 83% of the families. In FY09 20 families received low interest car loans. 


Fit Phelps

Fit Phelps is a countywide project aimed at educating people in the community on the importance of increased fruit and vegetable consumption as well as regular exercise in hopes that they will adopt healthier habits. Ultimate goal is to reduce childhood obesity. School components included jump-rope-rallies and healthy food preparation in the cafeteria.

In our 2009 Fiscal Year we served approximately 2000 youth and community members with our programming. Some of our results include:

  • 1,015 youth in St. James, Edgar Springs, and Newburg participated in fitness competitions
  • 96% of youth demonstrated an increased knowledge of healthy lifestyle choices
  • Hosted 14 community health and wellness events including “Walk the World”

Linking Hearts

This is a fun, relaxed, and unique event designed to bring together youth eligible for adoption and potential families (adoptive/foster) so that youth may feel special and hopefully find permanent homes. Missouri University of Science and Technology Greeks create a family friendly carnival and act as buddies for the day. In FY09 39 children and 49 potential families attended the event with S&T Greeks contributing 500 volunteer hours!
